"Whispering Bench"

Fairmount Park
Phila., Pa.

* * *

In Philadelphia's Fairmount Park , near Memorial Hall, is a memorial to some of the great leaders of the Civil War. This memorial was built between 1897 and 1912 under a bequest by Richard Smith.

This memorial consists of two curved stone "arches" forming a "gateway" to West Fairmount Park. Behind the curved arches are two curved concrete benches.

The Smith Memorial also includes an unexpected anomaly. A "whispering bench".

If you sit at one end of either of the benches you can hear everything said by someone at the other end of the bench. Even though that person is sitting about 30 feet from you, their voice sounds as if it's being 'whispered' in your ear.

Even if they speak real softly ("in a whisper"), you can hear every word as if it was spoken directly into your ear.

Have a friend sit at the other end of the bench. Then have him cover his mouth with his hand and whisper something. You'll hear the whisper 'plain as day'.

What is happening ?

Their voice is "rolling" along the curved back of the bench.
