William Penn

Philadelphia's
Founding Father

Philadelphia's 'Inside Joke'

* * *

This story may not belong with this website for a few reasons. It is not about something that is "gone" or "forgotten" or historic.

And it IS somewhat "risque".

But I have heard it referred to as Philadelphia's "inside joke".

That's why I'd like to share it with you.

I'm a native Philadelphian and have been for more years than I care to remember. But I guess I'm not an 'insider' because I just became aware of this.

If you're offended by 'dirty jokes' or would rather not see the city's 'respected father' in a 'compromising position', then please READ NO FURTHER.

William Penn Statue
on top of Phila's City Hall
William Penn is known as Philadelphia's Founding Father.

He is imortalized around the city in various ways. The most known and visible way is his statue on the top of Phila's City Hall tower.

The statue is facing, and pointing, towards Penn Treaty Park where Penn signed the famous treaty with the indians.

And from every angle in the city that it can be seen, the statue draws respect for the "Father of Philadelphia".

Every angle, that is, EXCEPT one.

Seen from the steps of Phila.'s Art Museum (the famous steps from the movie "Rocky"), or anywhere along the Ben Franklin Parkway, the statue gives a new meaning to the phrase "Founding Father".

William Penn
Pointing ?
A quick glimpse of the statue shows his pointing right hand to be a totally different ... ah ... appendage.

I hope we brought a smile to your face.
